My Best Kept Beauty Secret
 an Easy Way to Wake Up like This

 Do you ever wake up on the wrong side of the bed? You wake up really late by accident and have to rush around like a crazy person, resulting in having to skip most of your daily beauty routine or not having the time to wash your greasy hair? Yum. It already sounds like you set the stage for a bad morning and a bad day. You text your best friend or your boyfriend “OMG I am so ducking late this morning I am going to kill someone. I hate work.” You drive into work with a stank face, flipping someone off who “cut you off”, and cursing at everyone who dares to drive the speed limit-even though they can’t hear you, and it’s not their fault you are late. You get to work, barely look up at anyone, and begin to immediately dread the next eight hours. You begin to think of everything you have to do today and feel seriously overwhelmed and more miserable.  You sit hunched over in your own sulky stench. So, instead of getting to work, you start browsing through social media. Then, your boss comes in and sees you. You receive a lecture about your work ethic and your attitude. How dare your boss! Doesn’t she know you had an awful morning?! Hmmm, sound like you ever? I know it does.

Ok, SO, let’s back it up. Even though you woke up really late, and even though it was an accident, and you had to rush around like a crazy person, with greasy hair, and didn’t have time to do your daily beauty routine, you DO have time to smack a big fat SMILE on your face! Even if it is forced and ridiculous, and you really don’t feel like it, smile until it hurts. Smile through your entire commute to work, literally. Force that smile, look like a lunatic. Instead of cursing at everyone on the road, and instead of flipping off the guy that cut you off, smile and throw him the peace sign. While you are smiling the entire way to work, get some positive affirmations going. Say them out loud, say them in your head, sing them to the tune of the songs on the radio. When you walk into work, you hold your head high. You don’t let your greasy hair or lack of makeup get you down, because you are smiling! You are radiating positive energy and everyone can feel it. You say hi to everyone! You keep on smiling all the way to your desk. And guess what? Even though you still quickly checked up on social media before getting to work, and your boss still caught you, instead of the lecture, she smiled back at you! You know why? Because when you smile, the world smiles back!

So which morning sounds better? Which morning sets your day up for success? Personally, I would rather have the second option. And all it took was a continuos smile.  The thing about a smile, whether forced or natural, is that it automatically changes your mood, and your attitude.

Every time you smile your feel good neurotransmitters, dopamine, endorphins and serotonin, are all released. Serotonin release acts as an anti-depressant and a mood lifter. Not only that, but you’re instantly better looking when you smile! (this is why it was ok to skip out on your daily beauty routine!) People treat you differently when you smile. You are instantly perceived as attractive, reliable, and sincere. You radiate confidence. Your energy is contagious. So, not only is your smile serving you, it is serving others too!

How to Smile

1. Force It or Fake it til Ya Make It
When you are feeling negative or grumpy, force the smile. Smile even if you look crazy or feel crazy. Smile your entire commute to work, I swear it will work. Days when I really don’t feel like going to the salon, I literally smile the entire 20 minutes into work. By the time I get into work, my smile isn’t forced anymore. When you get to work and you have a to-do list a mile long, SMILE. If you can’t get out of it, get into it!

2. Positive Affirmations
To go with your smile, order a side of positive affirmations. While you are driving into work, get your positive affirmations going. It can be something you always say to yourself, or something that is just off of the top of your head. One of the girls from the salon told me she will say “I love my job. I love the people I work with.” Over and over again, upon coming into work. You could say things you are grateful for or recite recent accomplishments. Just keep it positive. I will be honest, it took me awhile to actually have any faith in this. At first I thought it was a bunch of crap. It really isn’t. It’s just something you have to turn to habit.

3. Pass it On
Pass your smile on! People who can’t smile need a smile the most. People who can’t show love need love the most. You can’t fight fire with fire. Remember that the next time someone’s negativity is trying to burst your positive bubble. Give your smile to someone who needs it! If someone flips you off on your drive, throw them back the peace sign and a big old smile! I love this idea. I got it from my friend Veronica, who told me once that her mother does it all the time. I couldn’t wait to adopt that. It is actually pretty funny to see people’s reactions because they are never expecting it.  

It’s easy to wake up like this, because all you have to do is SMILE! I consider it a beauty secret because I think a lot of the time we forget how the small, not time consuming, action of smiling, will totally change our appearance for the better! Not to mention it is free, you can take it anywhere, and it’s universal.  That’s right. Make sure you pack it up on your next vacation to France with you.  I hear those people really need to smile more. Of course everything is easier said than done. Don’t forget that to make a change it takes action and effort. So, on your next late start morning, plaster that smile on. It’s not like it hurts! : )
